A food bank is a non-profit and charitable organization that distributes food to people who are deprived. Local food banks receive food and grocery items from the farmers, manufacturers, distributors, retailers making available for charity and community groups. Foodbanks receives support from a number of non-food companies who assist with the fund as well as other essential needs of the needy.

The government provides a strong support in the form of funds helping food banks to purchase key staple food. The government of the Los Angeles is increasingly becoming aware of the food insecurity problems and try to combat the situation. There are a few key elements which the food bank donations program includes:

Food assistance program: The foodbank provides U.S Department of Agriculture (USDA) commodities to help feed the people with low-income. The authority of the food bank provides emergency and nutrition assistance at no cost.

Brown bag network program for seniors: The Foodbank drop off in Los Angeles provides free nutritious food once every two weeks to provide food to people over 2,500 low-income seniors at 22 volunteer’s staffed Brown Bag distribution sites. This program also helps individuals live as independent as possible taking no annual charges from the recipients. This platform is made possible through the commitment of dedicated volunteers who sort, bag, and distribute the food at the numerous locations.

Agency donation assistance: The foodbank offers food assistance to hundreds of charitable organizations distributing quality food at zero charges. It only asks for a modest contribution of food and other perishable products from the agencies.
